George had dated women in the past and thought himself to be heterosexual at the time but he later realized that he also liked men. He told his Wham! partner Andrew Ridgeley that he was bisexual at the age of 19. Finally, in 1999, in an interview, he revealed that he was actually gay. As per him, it was after falling in love with a man that ended his conflict over bisexuality. He said –
I never had a moral problem with being gay. I thought I had fallen in love with a woman a couple of times. Then I fell in love with a man, and realised that none of those things had been love.
George had appeared in a TV commercial for Diet Coke in 1989.
George was raised a Protestant Christian. His grandmother, before marriage, was Jewish.
He had even released songs such as “Faith”, “Jesus to a Child”, “Cowboys and Angels”, and “Praying for Time”. It appeared he believed in God.
But, overall, religion didn’t have a great impact on him.
George released his first studio album Fantastic in July 1983 along with Andrew Ridgeley as a part of the English pop duo ‘Wham!’. The album peaked at number 1 on the UK Albums Chart.
As a solo artist, his first album was Faith which was released in October 1987. The album peaked at number 1 on the UK, Dutch, and the US Billboard charts.
George made his first TV show appearance in Top of the Pops as himself in 1982.
